Bones heal differently in children than adults. Because kids are constantly growing and developing, they need specialized pediatric orthopedic care that only a children’s hospital like Miller Children’s & Women’s can provide.
Fully integrated, state-of-the-art orthopedic care is available for children from birth to 21-years-of-age with developmental disorders, congenital, neuromuscular and post-traumatic problems of the musculoskeletal system.
Our Orthopedic Center has a group of board-certified orthopedic surgeons — specializing in a wide range of orthopedic sub-specialties — who work together to cover the entire pediatric orthopedic spectrum. Our specialties include:
Why You Should Choose Miller Children’s & Women's
We're one of the only area hospitals to have the EOS Imaging System, which uses two to three times less radiation than a standard X-ray to provide extremely detailed, high-quality images of patients in a standing position, which can ease a child's anxieties. Because of the lower dose of radiation, it is ideal for children who require multiple x-rays, such as patients with scoliosis.
We have seven board-certified orthopedic surgeons, who are specially trained in different areas of pediatric orthopedics, allow for “total pediatric orthopedic care and surgery.” We perform more than 600 pediatric orthopedic surgeries each year.
We’re the only children’s hospital in California and one of only a few hospitals in the U.S. to offer ExcelsiusGPS® – robotic navigation technology – for kids.
Our Bone & Soft Tissue Tumor Program has a dedicated pediatric surgeon — fellowship trained in both pediatric orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal oncology — who specializes in treatment for pediatric patients with benign or malignant bone tumors. We are one of the only children’s hospitals in the region to have an in-house surgeon specializing in both areas of care.
Our Clubfoot Clinic specializes in the Ponseti Method, which is the standard for the treatment of clubfoot — a congenital foot abnormality. We are one of only a handful of hospitals offering this cutting-edge, non-surgical treatment.
- With seven state-of-the-art operating rooms designed just for kids, a pre-op playroom, and a renowned medical team of board-certified pediatric orthopedic surgeons, our Surgical Center is staffed and equipped to handle virtually any type of pediatric orthopedic operation, all while helping to lessen fears and anxieties of patients and their families.
Centers & Programs
We have a specialized Bone & Soft Tissue Tumor Program dedicated to the diagnosis, removal and treatment of benign and malignant bone tumors and soft tissue sarcomas throughout the body.
Our board-certified pediatric orthopedic surgeons are specially trained in pediatric spine trauma, spinal deformity and musculoskeletal abnormalities.
Our Orthopedic Center provides comprehensive assessment, treatment and follow-up care to children, adolescents and young adults with sports-related injuries.
Your Care Team
Our Orthopedic Center has a team of pediatric orthopedic surgeons who specialize in children’s bones and growth. Pediatric orthopedic surgeons complete additional training where they learn a much more detailed and specific level of care for orthopedic disorders and injuries in kids and teens. Going to anyone other than a pediatric orthopedic doctor can cause further damage to a child’s growing bones. Using pediatric-specific therapies and surgical techniques, pediatric orthopedic surgeons provide comprehensive care to infants, kids and teens after sports injuries, orthopedic trauma or deformities ensuring continued healthy bone and joint development.

A child life specialist is a professional who is specially trained to help children and their families understand their diagnosis and cope with being in the hospital. Child life specialists are available to help children understand what will happen during surgery or a test using simulated medical equipment, dolls, books and other teaching materials. Preparing children for surgery helps to lessen their anxieties and fears. Often called “medical play,” the preparation sessions are geared to the developmental level of the child.
Social workers provide emotional support and counseling, information and referrals to community programs or support groups. They can help decrease stress and guide patients and their families during their hospital stay and during their follow up care.
Our Orthopedic Outpatient Specialty Centers have nurses who specialize in the treatment and care of children who have conditions affecting their musculoskeletal system.
