A Child’s Work Is Play
We have several playrooms and activity rooms, with services provided seven days a week. The playrooms cover all the major areas within the hospital. They provide structured and unstructured developmental activity, medical play, diversion and entertainment for patients and their siblings.
We also have a “resident artist,” who visits regularly to conduct art workshops. Each visit brings a different theme or a variety of art projects, which can be hung in the patient’s rooms or are sometimes put on display in the hospital.

The General Pediatrics Playroom and Outdoor Patio provides multimedia entertainment with a variety of diversional and therapeutic activity for patients of all ages. With child friendly decor, the most up-to-date video games, computers with internet connections, books, board games and arts and crafts, it is a great escape from hospital routine. The outdoor patio provides a space for patients and families to get some fresh air and step away from the hospital environment. This playroom was made possible by the Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach Auxiliary and the Bickerstaff Family Foundation.
The Hematology/Oncology Playroom is a multimedia entertainment and therapeutic activity room for patients aged 0-21 with cancer and blood disorders. The room features the most up-to-date video games and computers. It provides a complete healing environment by bringing a craft and entertainment program to patients. The playroom was made possible through a generous donation from the Miller Children's Hospital Long Beach Auxiliary.
Our Pre-op Playroom located in the Surgical Center provides a soothing place for patients to learn about scheduled procedures and treatments through developmental play. We prepare patients and provide distraction and diversional activities to patients waiting for surgery.
Our Miller West Playroom—one of our largest playrooms on campus—provides structured activity for patients of all ages. An air hockey table, flat-screen TV, computers with Internet access, and video game consoles all contribute to the fun.
Sometimes, siblings have a difficult time with a brother or sister’s hospitalization. As part of our patient and family centered care philosophy, we offer a special program just for siblings of patients. Sibling Time is a complimentary program where parents of hospitalized children can bring healthy siblings, ages 13 and under to the Sibling Time Playroom located in the Miller Children’s & Women's Pavilion, where they can relax and have some fun with other kids. For questions or more information, call (562) 661-1099.
A second Sibling Time Playroom is available in our Cherese Mari Laulhere Children's Village where families can bring healthy siblings to relax and have fun with other kids while they focus on their child’s health care appointment. Call (562) 661-1401 to confirm availability.
The Teen Lounge located in Miller Children's West is a dedicated area for teens, where video game units and a variety of activitites are available for fun. Teens also have access to Kacie's Kloset, a closet full of fun stuff just for teenagers. The Teen Lounge was made possible by the Mattel Play Grants Program sponsored by Mattel Children’s Foundation and the Children’s Hospital Association.
