Today, beloved characters from the iconic Star Wars universe traveled from far, far away to Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital in Long Beach, on a mission to spread smiles brighter than a lightsaber, ignite laughter, and fuel the imaginations of children facing health challenges on the unofficial holiday, “May the Fourth.”

The heartwarming visit, organized in collaboration with the 501st Legion Southern California Garrison, brought the magic of Star Wars to young patients and their families. As a Stormtrooper, Boba Fett, and Darth Vader roamed the hospital halls, children’s faces lit up with awe and excitement.
“Every time there’s a visit like this, it really helps. Being hospitalized is a lot for a 10-year-old kid, or any kid, to go t
hrough,” said Jennifer Devoy, mother of Deklan Devoy, a patient at the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute. “Deklan has been out of sorts recently. He’s been sick and had to miss something he’s been looking forward to since Christmas. I was hoping Star Wars would visit for May the Fourth since I’m a big fan myself. This visit really lifted his spirits and gave him something special in place of what he missed.”

Throughout the day, Star Wars characters visited patients at their bedsides, handed out lightsabers and Star Wars themed action figures, and created unforgettable memories. For many children, meeting these iconic figures was a dream come true, offering a welcome distraction and a spark of joy during their hospital stay.
“Through special character visits like today, our goal is to bring more than just joy to hospitalized children,” says Ammy Majano, child life specialist, Cherese Mari Laulhere Child Life Program, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital. “These visits create moments of wonder, resilience and hope that transcends their hospital rooms. They inspire children to envision a future beyond their current challenges and remind them of the magic present in every moment of life.”
The dedication and creativity of the 501st Legion made this special day possible. Their generosity brought joy to children when they needed it most, reinforcing the power of kindness and storytelling.
As the Star Wars characters bid farewell, their visit left a lasting impression – proof that even in the midst of medical challenges, imagination and compassion can make all the difference.
