On Friday, Dec. 6, MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach transformed its giant auditorium into a festive “Santa’s Workshop,” bringing holiday cheer to hospitalized children during a time they are typically celebrating with school friends and family. The event offered a morning filled with joy as patients and their families explored holiday-themed booths to collect toys and gifts. Special guests – including the Avengers, Star Wars characters, and cheerful snowmen – added extra excitement and magic to the celebration. All of this was made possible thanks to the creativity and generosity of hospital staff, Turner Construction, and local community organizations.

Santa Claus himself joined in the festivities, spreading warmth and cheer by listening to children’s wish lists and joyfully handing out presents, brightening spirits throughout the hospital. Children also had a chance to have their portraits drawn, adding a personalized touch to the festive celebration.

Twelve-year-old Ariel, who had been admitted to Miller Children’s & Women’s just days before the event, was delighted to take part in Santa’s Workshop.

“This event made me smile so much,” shared Ariel. “I was so excited to win a gift; all the decorations were so nice. I love being here.”

This annual event offers hospitalized children a much-needed moment of joy and distraction from their medical challenges. By engaging in festive holiday activities, patients experience a sense of normalcy, emotional uplift, and the simple joys of being a child. These special moments support their emotional well-being and create cherished memories that can brighten their hospital stay and beyond.

“Santa’s Workshop is one of the most magical events we host each year,” says Rita Goshert, director, Cherese Mari Laulhere Child Life Program, MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach. “Many of our patients miss out on holiday traditions because they’re in the hospital, so we bring the holiday spirit to them. This event is a beautiful collaboration between our hospital staff and generous community members, ensuring every child experiences the joy of the season right here at the hospital.”

The Cherese Mari Laulhere Child Life Program at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital was developed to help make the hospital experience more positive for children of all ages. Child Life Specialists help to cultivate an environment for patients and families that is fun, engaging and child-friendly – especially during the holiday season.

Santa’s Workshop is made possible by Turner Construction, an 18-year sponsor, and dozens of local organizations who volunteer to create the magic of the holiday season for young patients and their families.
