The Cherese Mari Laulhere Child Life Program at Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital transformed a large conference room into a vibrant beach paradise, bringing sunshine and smiles to hospitalized children facing serious illness or injury. The annual Beach Day event recreated the joy of a classic summer day at the beach, allowing patients and families to enjoy a seaside celebration right inside Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital.
Guests were welcomed with colorful leis and tropical décor before stepping into a lively beach-inspired atmosphere complete with inflatable palm trees, pool floats and themed photo opportunities. Children explored interactive activities, including archery, prize fishing and magic tricks, creating moments of laughter, friendly competition and carefree fun.
“Beach Day is one of our most cherished events because it brings the joy and spirit of summer right to our patients, many of whom can’t experience the beach in person due to their medical conditions,” said Rita Goshert, director, Cherese Mari Laulhere Child Life Program, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital.
Beach Day was made possible through the generous support of the Michele Rae Crane Memorial Foundation and participation from community partners across Long Beach. Patients were thrilled to meet Marvel superheroes and walk the “beach” alongside members of the Long Beach Fire Department. Local organizations hosted beach-themed booths with games, prizes, and treats, while magicians dazzled with tricks and Bubble Mania created an “under the sea” experience with life-sized bubbles.
“My favorite part was winning prizes, playing games and listening to the music,” said 9-year-old Sebastian Mendoza, a patient at the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Institute. “It really felt like a day at the beach, and Karat [Miller Children’s & Women’s Facility Dog] was even dressed as a mermaid.”
Patients and families also enjoyed live performances by Long Beach-based family band Jelly of the Month Club, whose upbeat surf-inspired tunes and beach-themed songs provided the soundtrack for the day.
The celebration concluded with a special raffle, where lucky winners received Lego sets, toy cars, and oversized stuffed animals, capping off a day filled with joy, wonder, and unforgettable memories.
“It’s so important to create these joyful moments and put smiles on our patients’ faces,” said Goshert. “These children face incredible challenges every day, and events like this provide a much-needed break from medical routines. Seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter reminds us how meaningful these experiences can be. Beach Day not only lifts the spirits of our patients and families but also brings joy to our care teams who are honored to share in these special moments.”
