In the 1990s, 20 years after opening, MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach asked its patients and community to help choose a mascot that would represent the essence of the hospital. The community decided on a dolphin named Millie. Her attributes: intelligence, warmth and healing - all shared values of Miller Children’s & Women’s. Since then, the dolphin was incorporated into the logo, and over the years that logo evolved to eventually include a baby dolphin - representing the specialized pediatric care, as well as comprehensive maternity care provided for expectant mothers under one roof.

However, throughout that evolution, the baby dolphin never received a name. In honor of its 50th anniversary, Miller Children’s & Women’s once again went back to its patients and community for help. Throughout the past few months, hundreds of patients, families, employees and community members submitted ideas and votes. The results came in and the community decided to name the baby dolphin Miles!

Millie and Miles will continue to be a central part of the Miller Children’s & Women’s brand as it continues to grow to meet the needs of expectant moms and kids across the region.

“A cornerstone of Miller Children’s & Women’s is our patient and family care philosophy, so throughout our history, we can think of no one better to help shape our identity than the very patients and families we serve,” says Graham Tse, M.D., chief medical officer, Miller Children’s & Women’s.

As one of only eight free-standing children’s hospitals in California, and the only hospital in LA and Orange Counties to have 24/7 maternal fetal medicine specialists and neonatologists under one roof, Miller Children’s & Women’s continues to fill the unique health care needs of infants, children and teens and expectant mothers from the communities it serves.

In the logo, the heart shape formed where the mother (Millie) and baby (Miles) connect signifies the patient and family centered care philosophy that is still a cornerstone of Miller Children’s & Women's. It also embodies the loving environment and commitment to a simply better patient experience.
