It’s back-to-school time! And it's also time to erase what many of us call the “summer slump.” Besides re-focusing on learning, let’s also remember to return to healthier eating and exercise habits. For many families, the school schedule makes it easier to build healthy routines.

With childhood obesity being one of the most common health concerns facing children today, it is more important than ever to prioritize healthy choices.

Nearly 1 in 5 children in the United States is affected, increasing their risk for serious health conditions such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and mental health challenges.

Why Healthy Habits Matter

The task of reducing those risks might seem daunting. A helpful strategy that I offer to my patients and their families is using small, habit-forming changes to make a BIG long-lasting difference.

If you’ve heard of the book “Atomic Habits,” this is the same strategy the author James Clear discusses for approaching many different challenges.

Healthy changes do not happen overnight. Instead, small, consistent actions can add up to meaningful improvements in a child’s health and well-being over time.

Build Healthy Habits as a Family

Healthy habits start at home and involve the entire family. Encouraging children to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins supports healthy growth and development.

Simple Nutrition Goals to Get Started

Start with manageable changes and build from there:

  • Aim for at least 2 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
  • Gradually work toward 5 servings per day over time.
  • Reduce sugary drinks such as soda, juice and sports drinks.
  • Save sugary beverages for special occasions or "party drinks" rather than everyday consumption.
  • Replace a highly processed snack with a whole fruit.

Small nutrition changes can help children develop healthy eating habits that last a lifetime.

Make Physical Activity Part of Everyday Life

Regular movement is another key component of maintaining a healthy weight and supporting overall wellness.

Consider activities such as:

  • Playing outside
  • Riding bikes
  • Joining a sports team
  • Taking family walks
  • Participating in active games together

The goal is to make physical activity a natural and enjoyable part of daily life.

Don't Overlook Sleep and Screen Time

Children who get enough sleep and spend less time on screens are more likely to maintain a healthy weight and overall well-being.

Recommended Screen Time Guidelines by Age

The latest screen time recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics include:

Ages 0–2 Years

  • No screens except video calls with a caregiver.

Ages 2–5 Years

  • Limit screen time to 1 hour per day of high-quality, interactive content.

Ages 6–10 Years

  • Balance screen time with offline activities.
  • Encourage co-viewing and discussions about content.

Ages 11–14 Years

  • Support self-management of screen use.
  • Focus on developing healthy habits and boundaries.

The Importance of Regular Pediatric Wellness Visits

Every child is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to achieving a healthy weight and lifestyle.

That is why support from a trusted pediatrician is so valuable. Regular wellness visits help monitor growth and identify concerns early, allowing families to make small changes before more serious health issues develop.

Pediatricians can also help families understand whether their child’s growth pattern is healthy for their age and screen for obesity-related conditions, such as prediabetes, before symptoms appear.

How the Miller Children’s Care Network Supports Families
