With 2020 being a year that almost everyone is ready to put behind them, a ray of sunshine ushered in a fresh start as the Cherese Mari Laulhere BirthCare Center at MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach welcomes the first baby born in 2021 - Jacob. Coming into the world at 4 a.m. weighing 6 lbs. 13 oz. and measuring 19 inches long, he is the first child of Matthew and Kimmie, residents of Huntington Beach, Calif.

“While 2020 was a tough year for everyone, we did have some exciting things happen,” says Kimmie. “We got engaged, got married, bought a house and found out we were pregnant. Jacob was born 3.5 weeks early, but meeting him was a great way to start 2021.”

In celebration of having the hospital’s first baby of the year, Matthew and Kimmie received a special “First Baby Basket” — stuffed with onesies, booties, newborn clothing, receiving blankets, diapers and gifts for the new parents — from the care team at Miller Children’s & Women’s.

Whether a pregnancy is routine or high-risk, the Cherese Mari Laulhere BirthCare Center at Miller Children’s & Women’s has experts to care for mom and baby under the same roof. Unique for a hospital, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, OB hospitalists and neonatologists are on-site 24/7, so if a delivery isn’t routine, the baby is moved just down the hall to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to receive specialized care.

With exceptional programs, expert care teams and high-quality care, nearly 6,000 families trust Miller Children’s & Women’s to safely deliver their babies every year.
